STEM Scholarship Spotlight: Taylor Flieg

Hometown: Stafford, VA
Major: Computer Science
University: Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech)

Our STEM scholarship winner, Taylor Flieg, will never forget the day when she first experienced coding in middle school! Since then, a career in science and technology has always been on her mind, because she understands that as a result of their innovation, these fields are constantly changing the way we all live our lives. Taylor is happy to announce that she will be attending Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in the fall and will be perusing a major in computer science. After graduation, she hopes to become a software engineer and dreams of one day working for Microsoft.

Fun Fact: Taylor is very artistic and she just completed her second and final year of International Baccalaureate Art.

Some of Taylor’s greatest achievements during her high school career were receiving her Academic Letter and her High Honors and Summa Cum Laude pins. She is also very proud of the fact that she was part of her school’s Inspire VA Chapter that was able to register 71% of her senior class to be able to vote! As a result, her school’s Inspire VA Chapter also received a State Proclamation in May.

Taylor’s advice for younger students interested in pursuing a career in STEM is to follow their dreams as they could possibly invent something that could impact people all over the world. She would also like to share a fact that really inspired her when she first began to learn how to code. She was told that only less than 5% of people actually know how to code! She will always remember that and that is why she finds it truly inspiring that very few people are responsible for so many of the items we rely on daily.
